Javorník Brno
A folk ensemble from Brno, Moravia, founded in 1950. Dances and songs of Walachia and Moravian Kopanice, largely from the group's own field collecting.
About the ensemble
Javorník Brno unites people aged 20 and over who are interested in folk dance and folk song. The dancing section performs in folk costumes, accompanied by first violin, third violin, viola contra, clarinet, double bass and a cimbalom.
The ensemble presents dances and songs from the regions of Walachia and Moravian Kopanice. The core of the repertoire comes from the group's own research journeys around Walachia, made by its first members shortly after Javorník was founded in 1950.
In 1982 Javorník received the European Prize for Folk Art for its collecting and interpreting work. All of it is done by the members in their free time, outside work or study. Besides public performances, Javorník has made several radio and TV programmes and released CDs and DVDs of its own repertoire.
